When Oxford graduate student George Dole lined up against Roger Bannister at Iffley Road, he wore a pair of modestly-cut shorts with contrast binding. We’ve long admired the not-too-long, not-too-short silhouette and decided to re-imagine the style for modern runners using our performance 2:09 Mesh.

A Matter of Mesh

When “Boston Billy” Rodgers won the Boston Marathon in 1975, setting his first American Record at 2:09:55, he famously did so in a mesh tee he found in the trash. Inspired by his legendary triumph, we scoured the earth for the very finest performance mesh to use across our Van Cortlandt Collection. Astonishingly lightweight and antimicrobial with a luxurious feel, you won’t find anything like our 2:09 Mesh in a dumpster.

Shorts Guide

Our shorts collection is crafted to cover the full breadth of a training cycle from easy shakeouts to race day. We broke this list out by the short’s design intention so that you may find the best pair for your specific needs.

Quality from
the
Inside Out

A running short is only as good as its liner. So we built these from the inside out, using the same near-weightless, anti-stink 2:09 Mesh as the rest of the short. It's stitched with three separate panels for a more considered, comfortable fit. We finished the liner with two small pockets below the back waistband for stowing keys or credit cards.

Refined Details

Like the original Van Cortlandt Shorts, the details of the Grand are designed with functionality in mind. The short features an antimicrobial liner, elasticated drawstring waistband and internal pockets in the back. For these more relaxed shorts, a comfortable rise and easy fit offers more coverage.

We’ve long admired the not-too-long, not-too-short silhouette and decided to reimagine the style for modern runners using our 2:09 Mesh. Luxurious and lightweight, these 4” shorts are built for performance, featuring a considered, comfortable liner, three drop-in pockets, and an adjustable drawstring.

Key Features

Classic Performance

These shorts are designed to hit that sweet spot between not too long and not too short, with a modest 4” inseam silhouette, a channeled drawstring waistband, and a roomier rise.

Liner Notes

The shorts feature a lightweight liner in the same antimicrobial mesh as the body. Three pockets for keys, credit cards, or gels sit at the back interior of the waistband.

A Mesh with Merit

The 2:09 Mesh came to be, not only for its soft and airy texture, but also for its antimicrobial properties. With the funk-free finish, the shorts are built to battle bacteria.
